When I was younger, and still to this day, one of my favorite things to do was to go camping. Growing up in Florida though left me with a longing to camp in a place with soft grass, blue lakes, mountains, and perhaps not so many bugs. Last year I finally got my chance. Some friends and I packed up the car and drove an hour and a half south of Munich to Achensee in Austria and went camping for the weekend…and let me tell you, it was perfect.
The area of Tirol in Austria is extremely picturesque and beautiful. There are several campsites around the lake and I am sure they are all equally as nice, since all of them will have amazing views of the lake and surrounding mountains. We set up camp beside a small stream, built a fire, went swimming, cooked dinner, and basically just relaxed. There are also trails around the lake which are perfect for spending the day biking around. (We will definitely be doing this next time). There is also a small beach area with food and drinks available on nice days. I am pretty sure you could also rent a boat and head out on the lake for a waterfront picnic!
So if you are planning to visit Southern Germany or Austria and would like to experience a little nature, definitely head to this area. There are plenty of opportunities to camp, mountain bike, swim, hike, or just get away from everything for a couple of days. You surely will not be disappointed with the amazing landscape of Tirol.
