Streetlife Festival Munich, Ex & Hop Contest

Written By: Tonya - Sep• 06•11

I always enjoy going to outdoor city events when the weather is nice. Whether it be a farmer’s market, art show, or beer tasting festival (yes, there is such a magical thing) I always love it when I accidentally stumble into something like that on a nice day when maybe we didn’t know what to do. This weekend in Munich is the annual Streetlife Festival and even more interesting, the Ex & Hop Contest, which is a fun BMX and MTB contest / show held by some of my close friends every year.

Munich Cafe’s

To add to my ongoing list of favorite cafe’s is Cafe Altschwabing in Munich. Located in the heart of Schwabing on Schellingstrasse 56, this establishment has been in the city for over 100 years. I was recently introduced to this great spot by a friend of mine and it was easily a favorite. With it’s beautiful tall ceilings, elegant but cozy atmosphere, friendly service, and great prices…this is somewhere I will come back to again and again.

Berlin Travel Tips: Broke & Schön in Friedrichshain

Written By: Tonya - Aug• 25•11

As a girl living in Munich, I’ve learned that while there are great shops all over town, I’m not usually willing to shell out 150 Euros for a cute dress. Most of the small boutique shops I’ve found here have some really unique styles and clothing but are quite often insanely overpriced (for my budget at least) and while H&M has better prices, it would be nice to have more choices for inexpensive shopping.

Austria Travel Tips: Wildkogel, Neukirchen

Written By: Tonya - Aug• 17•11

Last winter I came to the realization that I could have a great time in a ski town, even if I’m not a skier. The same goes for visiting the mountains in the summer. About this same time last year we traveled to Wildkogel in Neukirchen for a Mountainbike event, the Trail Masters, and I was pleasantly surprised at what a great weekend I had, even though downhill mountain biking was completely foreign to me.

Travel Tips: Eating at Factory Girl, Friedrichshain, Berlin

Written By: Tonya - Aug• 16•11

Last weekend while visiting a good friend in Berlin, she introduced me to a local cafe that impressed me in every way and certainly is now on my list of favorite cafes. Factory Girl  is a small, cozy spot located on Auguststrasse 29 near Hackescher Markt and has it all, amazing food, comfortable atmosphere, and some of the friendliest service around. (And I’m from the states where people can be overwhelmingly friendly!)

*update (March 2013) They have moved to a new location so some of the photos are a bit out dated, but this is still a great spot!

Colorful Berlin

Written By: Tonya - Aug• 11•11

After hearing rave reviews from a friend of mine, last weekend I decided it was time to see another part of Germany and visit Berlin. The city is much more spread out than Munich and doesn’t particularly revolve around one center. Each neighborhood (or Kiez in German) has it’s own hub and unique character. After riding all over the place, I definitely settled that my favorite area of Berlin was Friedrichshain, and even more specifically, Simon-Dach-Kiez.

Camping at Achensee, Austria

Written By: Tonya - Aug• 05•11

When I was younger, and still to this day, one of my favorite things to do was to go camping. Growing up in Florida though left me with a longing to camp in a place with soft grass, blue lakes, mountains, and perhaps not so many bugs. Last year I finally got my chance. Some friends and I packed up the car and drove an hour and a half south of Munich to Achensee in Austria and went camping for the weekend…and let me tell you, it was perfect.
