European must see city – Munich

While I have done posts on many of the cities I’ve been to around Europe such as Vienna, Biarritz, Graz, Lisbon, and San Sebastian…I was realizing the other day I haven’t properly chatted about my own city. I know I have mentioned some cafes and restaurants as well as some day trips and things to do here…but I felt like I should do a more in depth post on the place I have come to know quite well, Munich.

Alpine Lake, Walchensee, Germany

There are numerous beautiful lakes around Munich. Starnbergersee is lovely, but often full of people and quite difficult to find a nice spot to stay for the day. This can of course be the case with any of the lakes on a gorgeous, sunny day…but I did find that one lake seemed to be quite a lot less crowded than the others, Walchensee.

Wintery Wonderland at the Partnachklamm

Last year I wrote a post on one of my favorite places to go in Bavaria, the Partnachklamm in Garmisch-Partenkirchen. While it is definitely very beautiful in summer, I might be so inclined to say, it was even more beautiful in winter. I suppose it was because it is really unlike anything I had ever seen before. Anywhere the water flows in the summer has now turned to ice, creating stunning natural ice sculptures all over. It is truly magnificant.

Day Trip from Munich- Garmisch Partenkirchen

Just about an hour from Munich you can visit Garmisch Partenkirchen, a picturesque mountain town in the Bavarian Alps. While this is a fun place to visit in the winter for all the skiers and snowboarders, it makes for a great little day trip in the Summer as well. You can easily take your bikes on the train and purchase a Bayern Ticket and for almost nothing, head to the mountains.

Bavaria Travel Tips- Partnachklamm (Partnach Gorge)

The Partnachklamm (or Partnach Gorge in English) is located in the town of Garmisch-Partenkirchen about an hours drive outside of Munich. It is a beautiful area that is well worth the visit if you are in Bavaria and have already worn yourself out on castles. ;) The Partnach River runs through this gorge and is about 2,300 feet long with limestone walls that reach about 260 feet high. Visitors can walk along a cut out tunnel that runs along side the river and take in all the amazing scenery.
